What’s Your Parenting Style? And How It Shapes Your Child’s Confidence, Resilience, and Emotional Wellbeing

Rebecca Heap

Have you ever wondered what your parenting style says about your child’s confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing? 🤔

Maybe you’ve caught yourself thinking…💭 “Am I being too strict? Too lenient? Am I getting this right?”

The truth is, parenting isn’t about being perfect—it’s about growing alongside your child. 🌱 Research in child development shows that the way we parent directly influences how our children see themselves, navigate challenges, and build lifelong emotional resilience (Baumrind, 1967; Maccoby & Martin, 1983).

So, what kind of parent are you? And how does your approach impact your child’s growth? Let’s explore three common parenting styles.

Do You Recognise Your Parenting Style?

Authoritarian Parenting 🔴

  • High expectations and strict rules

  • Heavy reliance on punishment

  • Limited child input in decision-making

  • May prioritise obedience over understanding

👉 Impact on Children: While children raised in authoritarian households often follow rules well, they may struggle with self-trust, decision-making, and expressing their needs (Grolnick, 2003). Research suggests that overly strict parenting can lead to lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and difficulties in social situations (Chao, 2001).

Permissive Parenting 🟡

  • Few rules or limits

  • Highly nurturing and supportive

  • Allows children to make their own choices with minimal guidance

  • Can sometimes appear more like a friend than a parent

👉 Impact on Children: Permissive parenting creates a warm and loving environment, but children raised in these settings may lack the structure needed to build resilience and self-discipline (Baumrind, 1971). Studies show that children of permissive parents often struggle with impulse control, emotional regulation, and dealing with frustration (Kuppens & Ceulemans, 2019).

Conscious Parenting 🟢

  • Emphasises parental self-awareness and emotional regulation

  • Aims to understand children’s needs and perspectives

  • Models positive behaviours and communication

  • Sets healthy limits while fostering open dialogue and autonomy

👉 Impact on Children: Children raised by conscious parents tend to develop emotional intelligence, healthy boundaries, and inner confidence (Siegel & Bryson, 2012). Conscious parenting fosters secure attachment, resilience, and problem-solving skills, helping children navigate life’s challenges with confidence and emotional strength (Perry, 2006).
